Snow sports culture: The lifestyle beyond sport

Après used to mean beer and sore legs. Now it’s closer to a year-round identity, one of the fastest-growing lifestyles around, and one that’s pulling fashion houses, resorts, and entire wardrobes along with it.

Here’s what’s going on up there.

Alpine Fashion

Gear stopped clocking out at the end of the season a while ago. Walk down any city street in January and you’ll spot triple-layer shells and technical outerwear that never went near a chairlift because the appeal was never just warmth. It’s the look.

Luxury shoppers have caught on too, treating serious alpine kit as a wardrobe investment rather than a one-season buy, since the same jacket that handles a whiteout on a black run works just as well for a commute through a cold snap.

Gen Z has taken it even further. “Gorpcore” and “Mountaincore” aren’t snow sports trends anymore, they’re just clothes now. For a generation that grew up online, technical gear reads less like sportswear and more like a signal: adventure, the outdoors, a certain kind of unbothered competence. Pair a $600 shell with jeans and nobody blinks. That’s the whole point. Snow gear left the mountain and moved into everyday life, and it’s not going back.

Wilderness and Travel

Take the sport out of skiing and snowboarding for a second, and what’s left is one of the best excuses in the world to go somewhere completely different.

Head to Stowe, Vermont, and you get Vermont’s highest peak paired with a small New England village feel. Cross the Atlantic to Les 3 Vallées in the French Alps and the trip turns social, glacier runs by day, a long chalet lunch, then straight into mountaintop après before the day’s done.

Or head to Gulmarg in the Indian Himalayas, where backcountry bowls come with local wildlife and a culture that’s worth the trip on its own.

Different resorts, different reasons to go, but the same pull every time: snow sports give you an excuse to travel somewhere you wouldn’t otherwise.

Après-Ski Community

Après-ski is the great equalizer, and there’s nothing else quite like it. Most sports end with a handshake and everyone drives home separately. Skiing ends with everyone in the same room.

The person who spent all afternoon falling on the bunny slope ends up standing next to the one who just came off a double black diamond, and by that point neither of their minds, same cold cheeks, same relief, same drink in hand.

That’s the appeal of it. Hot springs, fire pits, the odd shot ski passed round a table of people who were strangers an hour ago. None of them need an invitation; it just happens.

If any of this sounds like your kind of winter, grab your tickets to Snowbound Expo and head straight for the Alpine Runway, a full runway show of next season’s gear, from streetwear crossovers to technical outerwear, hitting the stage before it ever hits the slopes.

And when the shopping stops, the party’s just getting started. Saturday night’s Après Party After Hours brings together 20,000+ fellow snow obsessives for live DJ sets and drinks!
